Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme

Targeting social exclusion, a programme called V.T.O.S. (Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme) provides courses of up to two years duration for the long-term unemployed over 21 years of age. Courses focus on the development of employment related skills focusing on socio-personal development as well as technological and business skills and are delivered by V.E.C.s.

Dominic McKevitt, Dundalk, Co. Louth, talking about his experience of V.T.O.S.:

'Joining V.T.O.S. was a difficult decision for me. I was four years unemployed and my personal confidence was at an all-time low. In my mid-thirties I really felt on the "scrap heap" and unemployable because of my years.'

'Nevertheless, the decision was made to join V.T.O.S. and in hindsight, it was the best I ever made. It built up my confidence and offered a glimmer of hope that did not exist before. For the first time in four years I had somewhere to go when I woke up in the mornings...'

'I would have no hesitation in recommending V.T.O.S. to anyone seeking a helping hand. It is a provider of guidance and an instrument that endeavours to replace despair with desire and hopelessness with hope.'

The VTOS Programme is part-financed by the European Social Fund (E.S.F.).
