Sub-Programme for Water Services

This sub-programme will address weaknesses in existing water infrastructure which are inhibiting economic development and adversely impacting on the environment. The sub-programme is comprised of the following three measures:

1. Water Supply Measure
This measure covers the provision or upgrading of public water supply schemes to support economic development. It covers the development of regional schemes to deliver adequate supplies of good quality water to extended rural areas and the augmentation or upgrading of supply from existing urban schemes. Approved projects will be undertaken by the local authorities concerned.

2. Waste Water Treatment Measure
This measure covers the provision of waste water collection and treatment facilities to augment and upgrade existing services which cause pollution of receiving waters, or are inadequate to service economic development. Approved projects will be undertaken by the local authorities concerned.

3. Group Water Scheme Measure
Grants are available to support the provision of group water schemes in rural areas. In addition to grant aiding new schemes, funding will be available to improve sub-standard supplies to existing schemes by providing links for such schemes to the public regional water network. Where this is not practicable, suitable filtration and disinfection will be provided in order to ensure compliance with drinking water standards and to protect public health.
